EMET Profoundly Appreciates President Trump for Breaking Out of a Failed Foreign Policy Paradigm

Israel is one of the few nations in the world that has been asked, repeatedly, to give up “land for peace”, since it was victorious in the 1967 war. As we have repeatedly seen since the signing of the Oslo Accords on September 13, 1993, the land that Israel has ceded has been used as a base to regroup and attack it, particularly when it comes to Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

This is particularly true in the case of Gaza. In August of 2005, the government of Israel under Prime Minister Ariel Sharon decided to forcibly remove any remnant of a Jewish presence from Gaza. After a deadly internecine struggle between the Palestinian Authority and Hamas, Hamas emerged victorious. On June 15, 2007, Hamas seized control of the entire Gaza Strip.

Since then, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF)have returned to Gaza multiple times to suppress Hamas Qassam missile attacks, including in 2006, 2008, 2014, and after the atrocities of October 7, 2023. It is appropriate to recall Albert Einstein’s definition of insanity as “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

Although Israel has fought valiantly on seven fronts, and has taken out much of the Hamas infrastructure, including Yahya Sinwar, Mohammad Deif, Ismael Haniyeh and Marwin Issa, and the IDF has taken out approximately 80 per cent of the terrorist organization, Hamas is a virulent theology enmeshed within an ideology that easily replicates itself.

This situation remains untenable for both Palestinians and Israelis. Israel needs defensible borders for a secure and lasting peace, without the presence of hostile forces, such as Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, that use each land withdrawal as a base for further attacks. And the Palestinians deserve to have freedom of movement to be able to live in peace and security.

Says Sarah Stern, Founder and President of EMET, “After years of having to live with the abysmally failed ‘land for peace’ paradigm, particularly regarding Gaza, it is about time our foreign policy establishment broke out of the mold. It is far time for some creative, ‘out of the box’ thinking, and for that EMET remains profoundly grateful to President Donald Trump.”
