Dear Democrats,
On Saturday, President Trump announced he would enact 25% tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico and a 10% tariff on goods from China. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Canada would retaliate with tariffs on American exports. Apart from China these tariffs have now been delayed a month, and their ultimate future is uncertain.
What would it mean for you and your family if food and necessary expenses cost you $1,000 more per year? What would having $1,000 dollars less a year mean for you and your family?
Are there other ways you know tariffs could impact you? Could it affect your job? Please share your thoughts by filling out this form: Share Your Story [[link removed]]
Canada is Iowa’s largest foreign trading partner - we export about $3.5 billion worth of goods and import over $1 billion worth of goods. Our agricultural sector, and the manufacturing jobs that go along with it, are particularly vulnerable to trade wars.
The impact on our overall economy will take a little time to play out if they're enacted, but Iowa consumers can expect higher prices very quickly. Everyday items like canola oil, fertilizer, car parts, and electronics will be 25% more expensive. Even gasoline will be hit with a 10% tariff.
All in all, the non-partisan Tax Foundation estimates the cost of these tariffs will be about $1,000 for the average family. So we want to hear from you.
Hearing from Iowans about the real impacts of policy is how we are going to start to turn our state around. Help us to tell your story.
