The last few weeks have been filled with ever-changing information and guidance at the federal level and much uncertainty. As are many others, Start Early is actively monitoring the situation and measuring potential impacts to the early childhood system. We are also working with partners across the state to elevate urgent threats to Illinois’ youngest children and families. 

One way you can help do so is by joining Start Early and advocates across Illinois this Thursday, February 6 in a DAY OF ACTION TO PROTECT MEDICAID!  

A recently leaked document indicates that Congress is set to soon pursue harmful funding cuts and policy changes to Medicaid, a program that serves 80 million Americans, including children and families. 

Medicaid is not only critical to ensuring that expecting families and families with young children can access needed health and mental health care, but it also extends the reach of early childhood programs, like Early Intervention, doula services, and soon, home visiting. For example, in Illinois, Medicaid pays for the health care of 3.4 million individuals and funds 4 of every 10 births across the state. 

Join Illinois advocates this Thursday at 12 p.m. for a virtual rally, where together we will call on Congressional members to ensure NO CUTS to Medicaid! You will hear from elected officials and advocates and be provided a call-in number to contact your Congressional members and tell them proposed cuts and policy changes would have historically damaging impacts on our youngest generation and those who care for them. 

While the landscape of our work in the context of the new Congress and the Trump administration seems unknown, our priorities continue to be serving and supporting children and families and working closely with our partners and advocates to do the same.
