Friends,
As always, I hope you and your family are doing well, and thank you for working with us as we continue Phase 1 of safely reopening the Commonwealth.
We have all adjusted to our new normal of social distancing by finding new ways to build community across digital platforms like Facebook Live and Zoom. So this week, I want to share updates on upcoming virtual community-building events:
-
Today, Thursday, May 27, from 12PM to 1PM, I am joining the Office of the Secretary of Education and officials from the State Council of Higher Education (SCHEV) to hold a Faculty Affairs Strategy Session with college and university faculty from throughout the state. We will discuss faculty-centered concerns regarding COVID-19 and plans for our upcoming academic year.
-
At 6:30PM tonight, I’ll be joined by my fellow state Senator Jennifer McClellan and special guest Senator Tim Kaine for a live Telephone Town Hall, and we’ll discuss the COVID-19 crisis, the recent General Assembly Reconvened Session, and much more. You can join by calling (855)-756-7520 ext. 61194, followed by the pound sign.

On Friday, May 29, from 12PM to 1PM, we will join the Secretary of Education and SCHEV officials again to hold a Student Affairs Strategy Session -- a listening session with higher-ed staff and students from across the Commonwealth. We’ll discuss how we can better prepare and support students for further potential online learning. And we’ll discuss with students how to orient new students to expectations of college learning and college life with online tools, plans to address mental health concerns, and adjustments to co-curricular student life.
These listening sessions allow us to hear from folks across our community about what new challenges have arisen, and how we can provide better support and resources. My staff and I are here to listen, learn, and respond.
Our environmental work
Earlier this month, the Sierra Club released its Legislative Scorecard, and I’m honored to have earned an “A” designation as a champion for environmental protections. For the future of our state and planet, we have to promote environmental safeguards as our top priorities. This recent article highlights the environmental work that I and my colleagues focused on in the 2020 General Assembly.
Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month
With the conclusion of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage month approaching, I want to recognize the contributions of folks in the AAPI community during this period of crisis. Last month, I joined different South Asian communities across our district as we delivered food, N95 masks, and essential resources to frontline responders and other communities in need. Thank you to the members of the AAPI community who contribute so much to all areas of our society: healthcare, education, law, government, small businesses, finance, technology, and so much more.
As always, please reach out to my office should you need assistance or want to schedule a phone or conference call. As a reminder, the best way to contact us is by email: [email protected].

P.S. We updated our website with new sections for COVID-19-related resources, how to contact our office, and our 2020 legislative wins. If you have a moment, take a look!
