The President has moved to axe the USAID (the U.S. Agency for International Development) – with devastating consequences for innumerable populations around the world.
Established by President Kennedy during the Cold War, the USAID has an annual budget of $50 billion. These dollars are key tools for delivering humanitarian aid across the world and tackling global crises, including climate change. From funding programs for disaster responses to helping communities adapt to extreme weather, USAID is critical to global climate progress and keeping our own country safe by preventing instability.
John, with Trump’s allies working to illegally gut the agency, those programs — and the millions of lives they impact — are in immediate jeopardy. SEEC members are working tirelessly to preserve funding for critical programs that protect U.S. interests and the interests of our planet.
We've been here before. During Trump's first term, he tried to hit the Department of State and USAID with funding cuts of up to 30% — billions of dollars. But SEEC members in Congress stood up and protected our initiatives. He failed to freeze Congressional aid then, but this time, he and his allies are not playing by the rules (or the law!).
