John, there’s no question the people of Los Angeles are looking to the government for help. I hear it everyday from folks who are in need as we begin the restoration and rebuilding process after devastating wildfires ravaged our communities last month.
As we work to recover, we know that the federal Air Quality Index (AQI) isn’t measuring dangerous pollutants like lead, chlorine, and asbestos – agents that can have a lasting impact on our health long after we’ve rebuilt.
Our families need to know what they’re breathing, and what’s in our soil and water, and they need to know how to stay safe. That’s why I’ve led my colleagues from across Los Angeles County in demanding action from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and FEMA now.

A new federal task force overseeing consistent, regional monitoring, is needed to give our citizens the transparency they deserve. We should know the level of pollution as conditions change and cleanup begins, all across Los Angeles. If necessary, the public should be told how to take protective measures. I’ll fight to make sure that our communities receive up-to-date information to keep themselves and their loved ones safe.
