Friend:
This week we saw the Department of Labor bend over backward to help government contractors discriminate against employees who don’t pass their religious litmus test.
As I said in my statement, under the newly proposed rule if a government contractor says they’re religious, they are. If they say their belief is sincerely held, it is. And if they say they’re firing someone on the basis of religion, it’s allowed.
That’s why we mobilized our supporters to call out this proposed rule for what it is: an attack on women, LGBTQ people, religious minorities and other marginalized people — all in the name of religious freedom. Within 24 hours of putting out the call, AU supporters from coast to coast and of all faiths and backgrounds joined us to reject this proposed rule. Many more are still adding their names every hour.
If you haven’t yet added your name to our petition rejecting this attempt at employment discrimination, click here to sign on and join us!
For nearly 75 years, Americans United has fought for the separation of religion and government, which is the lynchpin of religious freedom. We won’t stop fighting until that founding principle is restored and protected in every aspect of our society — including in the workplace.
With hope and determination,
