Elon Musk announced on Twitter late Sunday night that he and Donald Trump were shutting down USAID. Trump made it official yesterday and put Secretary of State Rubio in charge of USAID.

Let that sink in: The richest man in the world, who was not elected to anything and does not hold a Senate-confirmed job, took to the website he owns to set U.S. foreign policy that would spell global catastrophe.

This comes after days of rumors from the Trump Administration that they were trying to move USAID under the State Department. Already 50% of the Global Health Bureau and 60% of the Humanitarian Assistance Bureau have been fired. Aid programs everywhere have been closed. They took down the USAID website entirely over the weekend, and USAID employees woke up Monday to emails telling them not to report to the office for work.

It’s hard to overhype how dangerous this moment is. This is a naked attempt to seize government by the right-wing billionaire class so they can steal from the American people. That’s why I showed up outside of USAID to fight back and rally public opposition to this coup.

Trump and Elon Musk do not have the authority for any of this. USAID is by law an independent agency funded by Congress.

These people are trying to destroy U.S. power in the world with wildly unhinged allegations and you have to ask why this benefits them. Well just look at who is cheering it on: China and Russia. What will Moscow and Beijing give Musk and Trump if we hand the world to them? We know Elon Musk makes a ton of money in China, and Trump feels he owes him for buying the election — and whoever else is buying all of the secret Trump meme coin to build Trump’s wealth.

It all feels so corrupt because it is.

I am doing everything I can to get to the truth of what’s happening and shine a light on everything. We cannot roll over. We have to fight — pull every lever of power at our hands, and I need you to join me and make noise too. We know what happens to democracies and governments when people choose to stay silent out of fear.

So I’m asking you to send a message that you have my back and to make sure we have the resources to take back power from Republicans who refuse to stand up:
