Immigration officials are forcing parents to make an impossible choice: stay together in detention or send their children away. Tell Congress and the president that this illegal practice must end!

Hi John -

Recent news reports[1] revealed that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials are forcing parents in detention to make a horrible choice: either keep their children with them in crowded detention centers indefinitely or send them away to the custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). It’s often referred to as “binary choice” and the administration has floated the idea in the past. Now it’s implementing it under the cover of the pandemic.

Shockingly, this is happening to parents of children as young as 1-year old.[2]

Parents are afraid they will never see their children again if they send them away. But the detention centers are not suitable for children. They are often overcrowded and lack proper hygiene and medical care, making them a perfect breeding ground for the virus.

It’s an impossible choice. No parent should have to make it.

Tell your members of Congress and the Trump administration – forcing parents to decide whether to send their children away or keep them in detention is an illegal practice that must end!

Instead of asking parents to make a horrible choice, the Trump administration should allow families to remain together and safely wait for their asylum hearings with family members or sponsors in the United States. This approach used to be the norm and is in line with legal decisions created to keep children safe.

Family separation hurts children. Kids and their families have already made a harrowing journey to reach the United States – fleeing untold violence. Inflicting additional harm on these children is cruel.

Act today to end this latest violation of children’s rights. Urge Congress and the Trump administration to end this harmful policy and allow families to stay together.

Thank you for being a voice for kids,
