Lack of broadband access hinders opportunity across our rural communities.

When Adam and I decided to move “home” five years ago, we easily moved back to Henrico County, hooked up the internet, and he was immediately back to work telecommuting. We became homeowners, taxpayers, and active community members in our hometown. But what if we had been from Louisa or Nottoway or the counties I serve without reliable access to internet?

This is a simple story, but it’s one that demonstrates how access to broadband affects families’ decisions on where to live and work.

Lack of broadband increases the “homework gap” for our region’s children. It hinders our farmers and producers’ ability to use current farming technologies. It makes it hard to attract businesses and grow those founded in our rural areas. It makes telemedicine technologies unusable, and it hinders growth and opportunity.

Ensuring broadband reaches our rural communities will have a direct impact on the residents of Virginia’s 7th district, and it’s why I’ve been working on this issue since I arrived in Congress.

Last month, an amendment I authored to increase funding to the USDA’s ReConnect program passed on the House Floor with sweeping bipartisan support, 408-22! In our district, and across the country, rural communities will benefit because of increased access to this vital funding.
