Dear John,

I’m writing to give context to some of the changes taking place here at GLSEN.

We are now officially being governed by a federal administration that carries with it more fear and uncertainty than ever before in living memory. Now more than ever, we need a right-sized GLSEN for building power in the new Trump era. It cannot be business as usual and the need to ensure that GLSEN will remain the robust advocate and expert throughout this period of urgency and uncertainty is more important than ever.

As I outlined in an OpEd featured in The Advocate yesterday, the stakes have never been higher. Within this fight for our future, we are seeing the impact of this political environment on corporate giving, as funding continues to decrease for GLSEN and LGBTQ+ organizations due to corporate realignment influenced by the far-right. The financial climate in which we are operating is more uncertain and perilous than we previously anticipated.

Despite this, we are not deterred. But we need to right-size and reorganize GLSEN with an aggressive plan and strategy as we head into the first half of 2025 so that we can be ready to launch a stronger, more efficient GLSEN in order for us to:
- Advocate for inclusive and equitable policies;
- Shape the national conversation on systemic change and education justice;
- Strengthen our national movement by working locally, across the country;
- Equip youth, families and educators with the necessary support, training, tools, strategy and community building networks to create change in their local communities.

What is clear is that GLSEN is an answer for these unprecedented times and we need your support to continue our vital work. To those who have already given, please consider becoming a monthly donor and member of the Dean’s List with a recurring gift to continue our impact for LGBTQ+ youth. If you already give monthly, please consider a special one-time gift to strengthen our efforts in this crucial time.

The precarity of this national moment shows us that GLSEN’s mission is critical and even more important than ever before, our message is clear and our organization must be strong to weather the current storm, but we cannot do this without you, our supporters.

Onward together,
