The U.S. COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in profoundly detrimental impacts on the American people and the U.S. economy. When the immediate public health crisis passes, a broad bipartisan stimulus and recovery policy framework will be needed to restart and rebuild the economy.

This series of policy proposals and analyses are intended to help Congress, the administration, and states develop energy policies within relief and recovery programs that help jumpstart the U.S. economy, restore and create jobs, prevent bankruptcies in the energy sector, and improve long-term competitiveness and innovation.

Proposals include the establishment of a new Clean Energy Deployment Administration to support the commercialization of advanced energy technologies, modifications to the Department of Energy’s Loan Programs Office, which currently has $43 billion at its disposal, to finance new energy projects across the country, and others.

BPC’s Direct Air Capture Advisory Council recently released a new white paper, the first in a series of three, making the environmental case for an ambitious, targeted, and diversified program of near-term investment in direct air capture technology as part of a comprehensive strategy for achieving international climate goals over the next several decades.

The paper analyzes the specific advantages DAC offers and the climate benefits it can provide as part of a broader strategy that includes both policies to avoid and reduce anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions and efforts to boost natural carbon dioxide removal processes.

Sasha Mackler appears on the BPC Weekly podcast to discuss the disruptions within the energy sector caused by the COVID-19 crisis and how those changing dynamics will lead to a new era of energy policy.
