Launched in 2018, our Workplace Travel Service has aimed to increase the uptake of electric vehicles and improve air quality in the city. This has been achieved by supporting businesses to understand, trial and implement low emission vehicle technology.
We?ve now released our ?What We?ve Learnt? document to summarise what the ULEV Experience has achieved these past two years. We hope it benefits others in Nottingham and around the UK to implement their own solutions to address air quality challenges.
Read more about how we?ve achieved these aims here.
Nottingham will be amongst the first in the world to receive purpose built fully electric refuse collection vehicles (eRCVs). After our UK first electric street sweepers, cage tippers and electric minibuses, we?re back at it with one of the first bin lorries in the world that has been built from the ground up as a fully electric RCV. We?ll have two eRCVs joining our fleet hopefully from later this year.
We?ll be testing them across multiple routes throughout Nottingham so keep your eyes peeled! They?ll be going down narrow streets, up steep hills and around the longest routes to see what they?re capable of. ?
The two eRCVs will save 27 tonnes of CO2 each year, an equivalent of planting 2000 trees for the two vehicles over their 10 year lifespan!
LEVEL has offered skills training and knowledge transfer in low emission vehicle technology deployment and fostered industry networking and collaborations. Funded through the Go Ultra Low Nottingham programme, LEVEL has established itself as a national platform for delegates wishing to learn about electric vehicles and associated developments.
Since 2016, LEVEL has delivered 21 major national conferences and training workshops, attracting over 1,600 industry delegates, launched the LEVEL ?EV Charging Infrastructure? online learning course, as well as building a networked cluster of SMEs, allowing opportunities for investment and collaboration.

Drivers who have never driven an electric vehicle (EV) can sometimes feel apprehensive and nervous about taking an EV out on to the road for the first time. This is often due to an unfamiliarity with the driving style of EVs combined with negative perceptions based on EV myths. A further issue can be that new drivers initially tend not to drive EVs in the most energy efficient way. This can result in the vehicle's electric driving range quickly decreasing and the novice driver experiencing ?range-anxiety?.
A recent survey found that uncertainty and confusion is leading the vast majority of motorists to delay changing to an electric vehicle. To tackle such issues, LEVEL have designed a beginner?s ?Driving an Electric Vehicle? online course, which provides an overview of electric vehicle driving techniques, aiming to give drivers the confidence to get in an EV and ?give it a go?!
During the course there is the chance to learn how EVs are easy and fun to drive, about the vehicle controls, maximising the vehicle?s range, how to charge an EV, plan long journeys, and many EV myths are dispelled. There is an opportunity to view instruction videos and test your knowledge with short multiple-choice quizzes. The course takes up to an hour to complete in its entirety or course modules can be worked through individually.

After four years of Go Ultra Low Nottingham, we?ve done a lot. With over 400 public charge points installed, ?600,000 in grants supporting local businesses to switch to sustainable transport, the UK?s first ULEV lane, the largest electric taxi fleet outside of London and much more, we?re applying to the National Transport Awards ?Contribution to tackling the Climate Emergency? category for the carbon emissions we?ve helped save by enabling more low emission journeys. Wish us luck in our submission??We hope to hear in the coming months if we?ve been successful!
Something to look forward to in this time at home is exciting new episodes from Fully Charged. Watch here as Robert Llewellyn talks about what?s coming up, including a peek into electric vans.
Can you spare some time to help Cenex understand what would encourage people to purchase electric vehicles?
Cenex are looking for people who can give about half a day of their time to join an online focus group on electric vehicle purchasing.
The ideal candidates will:
- Be able to drive.
- Be thinking about purchasing or leasing a vehicle in the next year.
- Will NOT have experience with electric vehicles.
- Able to join online meeting facilities with video and audio.
If you are interested please email [email protected] for more information.
