Protesters gather in downtown Los Angeles over ICE raids for second straight day

Protests over the recent ICE raids and deportations continue Monday as demonstrators march along streets through downtown Los Angeles, leading to LAPD issuing a dispersal order in the early evening. The large group, calling for a National Day of Action, could be seen through aerial footage walking in the middle of Spring Street, moving along to block an intersection at Chick Hearn Court and 11th Street all the while waving Mexico flags and carrying protest signs. Demonstrators on Monday assembled at City Hall, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The group had gathered to support the nationwide initiative, "A Day Without Immigrants." Elizabeth Henriquez from Monrovia joined Monday's demonstration. "The message is to the people, don't be scared and that we have rights as a community, as immigrants – don't be scared." By early afternoon, about 1,000 demonstrators filled the Spring and Main streets overpasses of the 101 Freeway as police blocked freeway ramps to prevent the marchers from moving onto the roadway.

LAPD finds ‘no evidence’ of criminal activity at site of viral ‘help’ photo

There is no shortage of people using Google Earth to make unbelievable discoveries across the world, from a possible secret military site in China to the largest Coca-Cola logo in Chile. Enter the city of Los Angeles , where a small triangular plot of land along the Los Angeles River in Lincoln Heights , near the corner of Cesar E. Chavez Avenue and Mission Road , has garnered the attention of social media users and sparked conspiracy theories and concerns about criminal activity related to human trafficking and drug cartels. The satellite images show the word “help” had been spelled out about a dozen times on the piece of land that is owned by the Union Pacific Railroad . The Spanish words for “trafficking,” “federal” and “terrorism” were also spelled out, as well as “LAPD” and “FBI.” Despite the alarming messages online, police have yet to confirm that anything nefarious is happening in that location.

Los Angeles gang member charged for car chase, crash that left multiple injured

A documented Los Angeles gang member was charged on Monday for a burglary that turned into a high-speed chase and ended in a violent crash in Camarillo, officials said. The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office said that the incident happened on Jan. 24 when the man, 24-year-old Jalen Amir Yoakum of Lancaster, was first caught stealing merchandise from a Target store. Ventura County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the reported theft in Camarillo, and found surveillance footage showing Yoakum allegedly concealing undisclosed merchandise before leaving without paying. Security confronted Yoakum, but he fled the scene, according to officials. When detectives later found Yoakum’s car nearby, he attempted to evade arrest by ramming into an undercover law enforcement vehicle and took off, leading deputies on a high-speed chase. The pursuit only ended when Yoakum purportedly crashed into two vehicles on Santa Rosa Road. The D.A.’s Office said the crash flipped one of the two cars, seriously injuring the driver and injuring three others in the car.

LA County couple charged with torture, murder of 4-year-old son

An Antelope Valley couple could face life in prison after the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office charged them with the torture and death of a 4-year-old boy in December. Andrew Havrella, the boy's father, and Lacie Fetters, Havrella's fiancé, have been charged in connection with the child's death, Nathan Hochman's office announced Friday. Fetters has been charged with the boy's murder. Both Havrella and Fetters have been charged with torturing the boy for months. The boy died on Dec. 3, 2024. On that day, Fetters allegedly assaulted him, killing him, according to the DA's office. "Any form of violence against children is reprehensible," Hochman said in a press release. "Our office will be their defender and will vigorously seek justice in this case." The child's death comes at least seven months after both Havrella and Fetters are accused of abusing and torturing the child "under circumstances likely to cause great bodily injury or death," the DA's office said. The alleged abuse went on from May to December 2024.
