Trump backs down on North American tariffs after threats rock stock markets
The MAGA cult leader's plan to unilaterally impose a 25 percent tariff on Mexican and Canadian imports appears to be on hold in both countries Monday after a series of phone calls between Trump and the leaders of the two nations, where they apparently discussed border policy with the convicted felon on an elementary level he could actually understand. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took to Twitter following his call with Trump and artfully explained that Canada was continuing to implement an ongoing $1.3 billion investment in security along his country’s long and largely unguarded southern border and noted that there already are 10,000 Canadian personnel working there on protection-related duties. And, according to Trump, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reportedly agreed to dispatch 10,000 soldiers to the US-Mexican border to help stem the flow of fentanyl and to help curtail migrants attempting to enter the United States. Take all of this with a very large grain of salt, folks. Donald fancies himself a master negotiator, but it sure sounds like he was bluffing and blinked.

BTC leads collective of progressive creators with plan to take back the internet from Joe Rogan and the right-wing machine
Chorus: This election has made it painfully clear that Democrats' messages are just not getting through the tsunami of right-wing propaganda and lies flooding through social media, and we have no real answer to a Joe Rogan or a Ben Shapiro...until now! Trump calls for creation of American sovereign wealth fund, floats using it to buy TikTok
1) Sovereign wealth funds are the very definition of socialism. 2) The United States clearly has no sovereign wealth fund. 3) The United States should have a sovereign wealth fund, but the oligarchs who own basically everything of value in this country would NEVER sign off on a wealth-distribution program that nationalizes resources and fundamentally reshapes how certain commodities are monetized and profits are shared. 4) Establishing a sovereign wealth fund from scratch would require funding — ie, taxes — and we all know how Republicans feel about raising revenue to help ordinary folks. Seriously, did Donald get into Elon's ketamine stash? And will any of the money-grubbing, anti-tax, far-right, billionaire sharks circling the Oval Office call him out for embracing — shhhhhhhhhh — socialism? We're guessing not. All the same, let's get @nationalizetiktok trending STAT, people!

Water Trump released from two California reservoirs will likely go to waste, not help Los Angeles with firefighting
Following the deadly wildfires in Los Angeles in January, President Trump ordered the Army Corps of Engineers to release billions of gallons of water from two reservoirs in California's Central Valley, more than 100 miles away from the fire zones. Now, the water released from dams at Lake Kaweah and Lake Success is rushing into a dry lakebed in the Central Valley, where experts say it can't flow to Southern California and will likely go to waste. "There is absolutely no connection between this water and the water needed for firefighting in LA," said Peter Gleick, a climate and hydrology expert. "There's no physical connection. There's no way to move the water from where it is to the Los Angeles basin." California Democratic Sen. Adam Schiff warned the release of the water also presented a risk of flooding and called Trump's actions "stupid and ridiculous and dangerous and wasteful." Sorta seems like the central theme of his presidency, to be honest.

El Salvador offers to house violent US criminals and deportees of any nationality in unprecedented deal
Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Monday that the US had entered into a shocking agreement with El Salvador to deport convicted criminals from any country, including the United States...in exchange for a fee, paid for with public money. In what has become a running theme for the Trump #2.0 administration, this is wildly illegal; you cannot deport American citizens to another country just because you feel like it. It's also unclear whether or not it's legal to deport foreign nationals to a non-origin country; both proposals are morally reprehensible and showcase the Trump team's utter disregard for the humanity of others. “It is a bizarre and unprecedented proposal being made potentially between two authoritarian, populist, right-wing leaders seeking a transactional relationship,” said Emerson College professor Mneesha Gellman, an international politics scholar. “It’s not rooted in any sort of legal provision and likely violates a number of international laws relating to the rights of migrants.”
Trump demands rare earth metals from Kyiv in exchange for aid
In Donald's world everything is transactional, including defending democracy, apparently. Speaking to White House reporters on Monday, the MAGA cult leader said he was "looking to do a deal with Ukraine where they're going to secure what we're giving them with their rare earths and other things." We'll translate: Ukraine has a massive reserve of rare earth metals, key elements used in electronics, and Donnie clearly wants to get his grubby little hands on them. He's essentially demanding Ukraine mortgage their future by giving up said precious reserves — resources they will badly need for reconstruction efforts — in exchange for ongoing US support in their effort to stave off Vladimir Putin's brutal and definitely illegal invasion. Quid pro whoa. It's 2019 all over again.

American abortion patients put in extreme danger by Trump and his cronies
National Network of Abortion Funds: Abortion rights are under attack by right-wing extremists across the country, and it's about to get a hundred times worse under President Trump and Republican control of the government. That's why Dose of Democracy is working overtime to help raise money for the National Network of Abortion Funds and make sure they have the resources they need to provide care to as many patients as possible before it's too late. Will you make a donation to help those on the front lines of the war for reproductive rights?
House Minority Leader Jeffries lays out war plan for Democrats to take on Trump
Rep. Hakeem Jeffries finally unveiled a 10-part plan for House Democrats' efforts to counter many of President Trump's objectively terrible moves to upend the federal bureaucracy. In a "dear colleague" letter to House Democrats, Jeffries vowed to use a March 14 federal funding deadline as leverage to prevent the MAGA cult leader from freezing or diverting congressionally appropriated funds. With Republicans commanding a razor-thin majority in the House, Democrats believe Speaker Mike Johnson will be forced to go to them to fund the government and raise the debt ceiling. Time will soon tell.
China counters with tariffs on US products, opens investigation into Google
Right on cue, China countered Donald Trump’s across-the-board tariffs on Chinese products with tariffs on select US imports Tuesday, as well as announcing an antitrust investigation into Google and other trade measures. This isn't the first round of tit-for-tat actions between the two countries, of course. China and the US engaged in a trade war in 2018 when Trump raised tariffs on Chinese goods and China responded in kind. It's the sequel no one asked for to a terrible movie everyone hated the first time around. So good to be great again!
Musk says he "deleted" IRS easy filing team that let Americans file taxes for free online
In a post on nüTwitter, unelected government official and the world's most famous ketamine popper Elon Musk revealed that he "deleted" the staff of the Internal Revenue Service that oversaw the agency's free, online tax-filing service. Nothing screams "own the libs" like the world's richest man sticking it to lower-class Americans and forcing them to pay for-profit, third-party companies to perform a service that was free just days ago. Just in time for tax season, too. Cool!
North Dakota Republican calls for Trump and the CIA to overthrow Mexico's "Jew" president
North Dakota state Rep. and professional mouth-breather Nico Rios said President Trump should direct the CIA to overthrow Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and "kick this Jew out of power" in just the latest, brazen antisemitic outburst by a Republican officeholder. Rios has served in North Dakota’s state Senate since 2022. In January 2024, he plead guilty to a drunk driving incident where he called a police officer a "f*cking f*ggot" and attempted to used his position in the state government to deter the police. Only question is, why hasn't Trump tapped Rios for a cushy Oval Office gig already?
