As wildfires wreaked havoc on Southern California over the past several weeks, many people chose to ignore evacuation orders because they were afraid their homes would be broken into, or their cars would be stolen.

Using a state of emergency as an excuse to commit a crime is despicable. We must stand with law enforcement, stop these crimes, and defend public safety.

That’s why Representative George Whitesides and I have introduced the Wildfire Arson and Theft Prevention Act, legislation that would criminalize:

* Starting or attempting to start a wildfire;
* Aiding or attempting to aid the spread of wildfire; and
* Committing theft in an area where a major disaster declaration has been made for a wildfire
