Dear John,
From our work to our social interactions to our schools, the Covid-19 pandemic shifted our lives into a new reality. Each week since school buildings have closed, we have chronicled how the system is evolving in our weekly newsletter The New Reality Roundup. We also took the extraordinary step to re-examine our policy goals for the year and built a new agenda around making a difference for kids who are now navigating an education system that looks very different from how it did a year ago.
It isn’t just our policy goals that are changing, but also the way we interact with policymakers, opinion leaders and grassroots supporters. Our outreach teams have been at the forefront of this effort. They are among the best in the business in building meaningful relationships with students, parents and advocates in their states and cities. In normal times, that happens through frequent face-to-face interactions, which is clearly not an option now. However, they have not let this crisis slow them down: they have wielded technology, refined their approach and have managed to strengthen the relationships they have with advocates.
We want to share more about these tactics and the transition to online organizing by grassroots advocates. On Wednesday, June 10 at 3 p.m. ET, we are hosting a webinar titled Afternoon Advocacy with 50CAN: Community Organizing in Cyberspace. We invite you to join, learn and share so that we all can do more to empower families to be better advocates for the education of their children.
