While I’ve technically been in office for three weeks, it didn’t feel right until we came together as a Delaware family to formalize the privilege that I have to represent the greatest state in the House of Representatives.
That’s why last week I was honored to be sworn in at an honorary ceremony right here in Delaware, at the Old Town Hall in Wilmington:
I’m entering Congress at a moment of great uncertainty and fear for so many in our country.
While it’s understandable that many are feeling overwhelmed by our politics, it’s important that we confront our challenges head on and face up to the circumstances that gave rise to the current state of our politics.
There’s a lot of very real pain that exists across this country right now, in red areas and blue areas alike. That’s why I’m committed to fighting for all of Delaware, and to working with anyone who is willing to work with me to help our neighbors.
Because here in Delaware, we know you cannot have a diverse democracy if we lose our capacity to have conversations across difference and disagreement, if dissent is disallowed, if we stop seeing one another as people.
And while I know people are scared and angry, we must remember that democracy is not easy. Changemaking is not easy.
But it is possible if at the national level, we seek to replicate what is so special about Delaware: that by being close to one another we can find compassion for one another.
That is my pledge to you. To stand up to abuse of power, but to resist the urge to move away from those who think differently than we do. To see everyone’s pain, to foster a politics of grace, not of grievance, and in the words of Scripture, to be the “repairers of the breach.”
