Your vote counts, but many of the decisions that guide our region are made by hundreds of unelected members of boards and commissions. This powerful network — largely appointed by elected officials but legally independent — makes decisions that affect development, health, law enforcement and much more.

Since I joined PublicSource this year, I've been working with our team to prepare an online guide to that network. Starting Thursday, you can begin to explore that layer of the power structure with a rollout focused on development-related boards and commissions. Board Explorer ([link removed]) allows you to see what these panels do; check out their members; and if there's a board whose work interests you, find out how to reach out and voice your views.

We're focusing initially on development because the pandemic has floored the economy. Many of the 16 boards featured in our rollout will make tough decisions as they try to get the region on its feet again. We're inviting you to explore the backgrounds of the 99 members of those boards, to look at their overall demographic information, and to read about three who epitomize different aspects of the development infrastructure.

In coming months, we'll be adding more boards, people and stories. We hope that as we build, you'll navigate this network, share your thoughts and findings with us — and, if you're so moved, engage with the boards themselves.
