Dear Friend, 

Lowering costs is one of my top priorities.

Michiganders are already struggling with high costs—the last thing we need is for prices at the store, at the pump, and online to increase even more. The significant tariffs imposed by President Trump over the weekend could jack up prices on countless everyday products and basic necessities, making your life more expensive.

Companies pass tariff costs on to you, the consumer. That means President Trump’s tariffs amount to a huge middle-class tax hike that will cause Michigan families to pay more out of pocket to heat their homes, fill their gas tanks, and find affordable housing at a time when inflation is already high. This middle-class tax hike could cripple our economy and will hit working-class, blue-collar families especially hard. As companies look to adjust, a 25 percent tariff will hurt American auto workers and put hundreds of thousands of jobs at risk. It will drive up the cost of cars, and car parts, and slow down production lines.  

I’m proud of the progress we have made to bring supply chains home, grow auto manufacturing, and ensure Michigan’s talented workers can continue building the future of the auto industry. I have made it clear that I am willing to work with the President along with Republicans and Democrats in the Legislature to protect Michigan’s auto industry, lower costs, and fight for working families. But wide-reaching tariffs on our closest, largest trading partners will hurt Michigan.

I’m working right now to minimize the impact these tariffs could have on your ability to pay the bills and put food on the table, and I want to hear directly from you. How would increased costs from Trump’s tariffs, whether at the grocery store or on your energy bill, affect you and your family?
