When wildfires wreaked devastation across southern California, FEMA has
been there, providing essential support. FEMA has been a critical part of
the recovery effort, covering the cost of debris removal and providing
one-time cash payments to survivors.(1,2)

From Anaheim to Asheville, FEMA has provided crucial resources that helped
devastated communities recover quickly, even when local government was
overwhelmed by the scale of the devastation.

And now, Donald Trump wants to end all that. Taking yet another page out
of the Project 2025 playbook, Trump is looking to dismantle FEMA and force
states to cover 75% of the cost of recovery from disasters.(3)

As hurricanes, tornadoes, and wildfires escalate and grow more
destructive, this is the time to strengthen our federal disaster safety
net, not dismantle it.

This move by the Trump administration has no basis in sound policy or good
government. Instead, it’s an ideological play to force municipalities and
states to manage on their own and line the pockets of Trump’s billionaire
friends at the expense of average Americans.

Fortunately, Congress has the power to act. As more constituents around
the country face disaster and have seen FEMA at work, more members of
Congress will think twice about cutting essential services to their
constituents. By lifting our voices and highlighting FEMA’s crucial work,
we can exploit the divisions that already exist between Trump and
Congress.
