Good afternoon Law Center supporters,
Our country is at a crossroads.
Rents keep going up. More and more people are struggling to get by, causing a dramatic increase in homelessness. Instead of helping, President Trump is trying to shut down funding to shelters, homeless services, and housing programs, and politicians are passing laws that make homelessness worse.
We can’t continue down the path of harm, arrests, sky-high rent, and growing homelessness. This path is costly, ineffective, and deeply unpopular. Instead, we must walk the path of justice, where everybody has the housing and supports they need and where a safe place to live is treated as a need, not a luxury.
Advocates in cities and states across the country show us that another way is possible. Legislatures in Illinois, Maryland, Virginia, and Connecticut have already introduced laws restoring homeless people's rights that the Supreme Court gutted in June. Towns across the country, from Paterson, NJ to Brockton, MA, have blocked harmful, anti-homeless laws. When we come together and fight for what is right, we can win.
Public opinion is also changing, too. Almost three out of four adults nationwide reject the use of jails, tickets, and fines for people sleeping outside when there is
nowhere else for them to go, and 61% said the high cost of housing is a major cause of homelessness.
