Good afternoon Law Center supporters,
Our country is at a crossroads.

Rents keep going up. More and more people are struggling to get by, causing a dramatic increase in homelessness. Instead of helping, President Trump is trying to shut down funding to shelters, homeless services, and housing programs, and politicians are passing laws that make homelessness worse.

We can’t continue down the path of harm, arrests, sky-high rent, and growing homelessness. This path is costly, ineffective, and deeply unpopular. Instead, we must walk the path of justice, where everybody has the housing and supports they need and where a safe place to live is treated as a need, not a luxury.

We’ve seen what will happen if we continue on this path of anti-homeless laws and sentiments. We’ve seen the man who choked Jordan Neely to death on a New York subway car both
acquitted and celebrated by elected officials. We’ve seen police in Kentucky ticket a woman in active labor for sleeping outside. And tragically, we’ve seen a bulldozer in Atlanta kill a homeless man during an encampment raid.

Advocates in cities and states across the country show us that another way is possible. Legislatures in Illinois, Maryland, Virginia, and Connecticut have already introduced laws restoring homeless people's rights that the Supreme Court gutted in June. Towns across the country, from Paterson, NJ to Brockton, MA, have blocked harmful, anti-homeless laws. When we come together and fight for what is right, we can win.

Public opinion is also changing, too. Almost three out of four adults nationwide reject the use of jails, tickets, and fines for people sleeping outside when there is nowhere else for them to go, and 61% said the high cost of housing is a major cause of homelessness.

TAKE ACTION NOW

In response to the growing threats against our homeless neighbors, we are sharing our 2025 playbook.
Click here to learn more and join us by taking action below.

Last week, the White House began playing games with vital funding for human needs. The outpouring of advocacy shows just how much power we have when we raise our voices. Now, we need your help to keep the pressure on.

Here are three things you can do to stay in the fight with us:

2. Join the Housing Not Handcuffs Campaign, a nationwide movement to fight against anti-homeless laws and push for the true solutions to homelessness, like housing and support.

3. Donate to the National Homelessness Law Center. Our small but mighty team is all in on the fights before us. Any donation you make will go a long way in fueling our work.
