Friend-
Happy Black History Month!
I’m proud to serve not only as your Attorney General, but also as the first Black woman elected to statewide office in Massachusetts history. It’s an honor I don’t take lightly, and I know every day, I stand on the shoulders of so many trailblazers and freedom fighters who came before us.
Massachusetts is home to the movements that pushed this country to live up to its promises of freedom and equality for all of its citizens. Frederick Douglass started the abolition movement here in Massachusetts, and let’s not forget Dr. King and Coretta Scott met as college students in Boston. While the work is far from over, I’m proud of the progress we’ve made. It’s now up to us to fight to defend and advance the wins of our civil rights heroes. [[link removed]]
Black History Month feels different this year, and it’s okay for
us to acknowledge that. On MLK Day, when we could have
sworn in our first Black woman president, we instead watched Donald Trump take office. The very same man who
discriminated against Black renters in New York and took out a full page newspaper ad calling for the death penalty for the
Exonerated Five.
While he fights to sow chaos and confusion on the federal level, know that we are doing everything we can in Massachusetts to protect our residents’ rights and state economy. Massachusetts will continue to be a place that welcomes everyone and champions diversity for the strength we know it is.
As we go into Black History Month, let’s honor the struggles of the past by promising to keep up the fight of our ancestors in the present.
In solidarity,
Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell
