Lemuel Haynes
Lemuel Haynes was a patriotic American who rose from humble beginnings as an indentured servant<[link removed]>. During those years, he had the rare opportunity to attend school<[link removed]>, which shaped his future; he not only learned to read and write but also gained recognition for his talent in delivering sermons.

When his indenture ended, Lemuel enlisted<[link removed]> as a Minuteman in the American War for Independence. He played a role in the siege of Boston and the expedition against Fort Ticonderoga.

After the war, in 1785, Lemuel was ordained<[link removed]> as a minister. Throughout his decades of ministry, he led both all-white congregations and mixed congregations where black and white Americans worshiped together.
In 1804, he made history as the first black man to receive<[link removed]> an honorary master’s degree in the United States.
