After I was sworn into office, I worked alongside my new executive team to develop three core priorities that guide our work in the agency.

We’ve made great strides in the agency, so I wanted to update you on how we’ve worked to achieve these core priorities.

1. Implement critical agency-wide improvements to help our state government work better.

One of our primary focuses has been modernizing our agency to serve our constituents better. Last year, we launched the Maryland Tax Connect portal for businesses and announced that Maryland will participate in the IRS Direct File program this year. Both allow individuals and companies to file their taxes more quickly and efficiently! Direct File is simply a better and easier way to file for eligible Marylanders, and I’m proud we can offer it this tax season.

2. Reimagine how the resources and expertise of the office can make a positive impact on Maryland families, communities, and businesses.

Over the past two years, our team has released multiple reports that provide valuable insight into the issues impacted by our work, provide essential data for our policymakers, and guide our future efforts. You can click here to find out more about these reports. We also have an office of public engagement that meets Marylanders where they are. This tax season, they are holding webinars all January and February to offer tax tips and resources to communities and individuals who want some extra help for themselves or to share with others.

3. Ensure Maryland is well-positioned for responsible long-term economic growth and success.

On the Board of Revenue Estimates, we’ve continued to ensure that our elected leaders have accurate data and numbers when crafting a balanced budget. Additionally, on the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System Board of Trustees, we’ve worked to lower long-term risks for our pension fund by treating climate risk as an investment risk.

I’m proud of our progress over the last two years, and I look forward to accomplishing even more together as we work toward our vision of creating a more equitable and prosperous state for all our residents.
