Dear John,

Happy New Year everyone!

I hope you had a chance to unwind and enjoy a well-deserved break over Christmas. I spent some quality time with friends and family, and now that I'm back into the swing of things I wanted to share some important updates with you.

It’s no secret the past year has been tough for many Kiwis. Rising costs and higher interest rates have placed real pressure on families, businesses, and communities. But thanks to the work we’ve put in, we’re starting to turn the tide - inflation is now down to 2.2 per cent, a clear sign that our policies are making a real difference.

Over the past year, we’ve delivered relief where it matters most. Wages are now growing faster than prices, and interest rates are beginning to ease. For homeowners, that means savings of around $200 every fortnight on a $500,000 loan. On top of that, tax relief is now in place, helping hardworking Kiwis keep more of their earnings.

This is just the beginning. 2025 is set to be a year of progress, opportunity, and meaningful relief for New Zealanders. We're committed to building on this momentum and delivering real results for you and your family. Let’s make this year a great one!

A Year of Growth and Opportunity

Last week, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon delivered a strong message: 2025 will be the year of growth. Our government is committed to removing barriers that have held New Zealanders back for too long. We are moving beyond the culture of "no" and making it easier for Kiwis to succeed — whether that’s through business growth, infrastructure development, or job creation.

To achieve this, we are fast-tracking key projects, reforming the Resource Management Act (RMA), simplifying health and safety regulations, enabling responsible mining, and cutting red tape for farmers so they can focus on growing their businesses instead of battling bureaucracy. These changes are about unlocking potential, attracting investment, and fostering economic confidence.

Creating New Opportunities for Investment and Growth

A thriving economy relies on innovation, investment, and skilled talent. Last week, we launched Invest New Zealand, an agency designed to attract overseas investment, create high-value jobs, and boost industries such as finance, technology, energy, and advanced manufacturing. This programme sends a clear message to global investors: New Zealand is open for business, and we welcome those who want to contribute to our future.

Encouraging Tourism and Remote Work

We also recognise the importance of tourism and global talent mobility. That’s why we have relaxed visitor visa requirements, making it easier for skilled professionals and digital nomads to work remotely while experiencing New Zealand’s unique lifestyle. We’re aiming to attract high-earning professionals who can contribute to our economy while also promoting New Zealand as a world-class destination for business and leisure.

Building a Future Where Kiwis Can Thrive

Everything we are doing — cutting unnecessary regulations, attracting investment, and supporting industries — has one goal: to make New Zealand a place where people can truly thrive. Whether you're raising a family, running a business, or looking to build a better future, our focus is on creating an environment where hard work is rewarded, opportunities are accessible, and growth is encouraged.

The year ahead is about action, ambition, and opportunity. We’re committed to delivering real change and making sure 2025 is a year where Kiwis can move forward with confidence.

Backing Our Farmers: Wool’s Place in Kāinga Ora Homes

New Zealand’s farmers are the backbone of our economy and supporting them means ensuring their world-class products have a strong and sustainable future. That’s why we’re committed to pushing government agencies to prioritise homegrown wool over synthetic alternatives wherever possible.

In a significant step forward, Kāinga Ora has reopened its carpet procurement process, allowing wool carpet suppliers to bid alongside synthetic alternatives. This is great news, not just for wool growers but for all New Zealanders who value sustainability, durability, and supporting local industries.

Selwyn is home to some of New Zealand’s best food and fibre producers, and this move will help create stronger demand for their wool. With government agencies now on board, we hope to see an upward trend in wool’s market value, benefiting not just farmers but the entire rural economy.

This is just the beginning. The more we advocate for wool across public and private sectors, the more we can future-proof an industry that has been a cornerstone of New Zealand’s heritage for generations. I look forward to seeing the impact of this decision and will continue working to ensure our primary industries get the backing they need to thrive.

Youth MP

Are you passionate about making a difference and representing Selwyn at the national level? I’m looking for a Youth MP to represent our community at Youth Parliament 2025.

Held every three years, Youth Parliament provides a unique opportunity to learn about New Zealand’s democratic process, contribute to government decision-making, and amplify the voices of young people.

Selwyn has a proud history of sending outstanding future leaders to Parliament, and this could be your chance to follow in their footsteps.
No prior political experience is needed — just enthusiasm, curiosity, and a desire to make a difference!

To apply, send either:

- A short video, or
- A one - page document

explaining why you would make a great Youth MP to [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])

Take this chance to represent Selwyn and make your voice heard!

Out and About

On Tuesday, 4th February, I’ll be in Queenstown to kick off the first Pay Gap Calculator Toolkit Roadshow event of 2025 in partnership with the Queenstown Business Chamber of Commerce.
As Minister for Women, my focus is on supporting women’s economic empowerment, ensuring they have greater opportunities and choices.

The gender pay gap has remained around 9 per cent since 2017, which is why I’m engaging directly with businesses to share the practical tools we’ve developed to close the gap and support women in achieving success.

The event will also feature a panel discussion with business leaders, offering valuable insights into the challenges women face in the workplace and how we can work together to drive change.

If you’re in the area, I’d love for you to join us!
