This is pretty frustrating, friend.
The Senate went into recess without voting on a single piece of coronavirus legislation. I’m reaching out to you today to break down that process and talk about my priorities in the Senate moving forward.
Instead of focusing our attention on making sure everyone has the resources and information they need to come through this pandemic safely, Republican leadership continues to advance judicial nominees for federal and circuit courts.
Let me be frank: voting on qualified judicial nominees is part of the job. But right now, we need to be focused on guiding our country through an unprecedented health crisis, not on packing the courts or rubber-stamping the President’s political agenda.
We’re facing testing shortages in Virginia and across the country, and the number of coronavirus cases continues to rise. Coupled with unemployment numbers that rival the Great Depression, in my estimation there’s a great deal of work to be done before we should be talking about judicial appointments.
I’m ready to get back to the Senate and work on the issues that matter: protecting access to affordable health care, helping the small businesses and workers struggling during this pandemic, and, come November, ensuring that every American is able to safely cast their vote.
My hope is that my Senate colleagues will press forward with me, so we can pass important measures like the Paycheck Security Act, which would reconnect furloughed or laid off workers with their health care benefits and with their paycheck.
We have our work cut out for us. I’m ready to rise and meet this challenge to protect Virginians — and all Americans — so we can safely move forward.
Thank you for your support. I hope you and your loved ones are staying safe and healthy.
