On Feb. 4, the USO will celebrate its 84th birthday — a milestone that caring Americans like you helped make possible. This celebration fills us with pride and gratitude for the incredible journey we’ve shared with the heroes who serve in America’s military.
For more than eight decades, the USO has been a steadfast partner to our service members and their families, offering support, entertainment, critical resources, a connection to home when it's needed most and so much more. And it's all thanks to dedicated supporters like you.
It all began in 1941, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt envisioned a united front to boost the morale of the members of our military and keep them connected to their loved ones. Since then, we have been there for every military generation, through times of conflict, times of peace and everything in between.
During World War II, USO Centers welcomed more than a million service members during the peak of their operations. From providing warm meals to offering a space to write letters, the USO became a vital source of comfort. Our legendary USO Camp Shows brought laughter and joy to the front lines, with stars like Marlene Dietrich, Ann-Margret and Marilyn Monroe brightening our military heroes' days.
Through every major conflict since then — the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, Operation Enduring Freedom and natural disasters right here at home — the USO has never wavered in its mission. Even in the toughest moments, we’ve been there, providing support and connection to help service members who are far from their loved ones.
As we prepare to celebrate our 84th birthday, the USO continues to evolve and adapt to meet the needs of our military community. Whether it’s as simple as offering a warm welcome at an airport, we are here — to lend a hand and to always stand with our service members.
But what many people don't realize is that the USO is not a part of the federal government. We're a nonprofit organization, which means none of this would be possible without the unwavering support of caring friends like you. So, I want to say a heartfelt THANK YOU for supporting the USO as we strengthen the well-being of our military heroes and their families. There is no greater honor.
Happy birthday, USO! Here's to the next 84 years.
With deepest gratitude,
J.D. Crouch II
President and CEO, USO
