But we didn’t realize just how quickly the Trump administration would move to dismantle scientific research.
In less than two weeks, Donald Trump has already canceled National Science Foundation grant review panels, halting funding decisions for projects on atmospheric science, mathematics, and more. At the National Institutes of Health, a hiring freeze and communication lockdown are putting critical climate and health research at risk.
This isn’t the usual bureaucratic chaos – it’s an intentional effort to censor scientists and their progress. Research on extreme weather, pollution, and public health requires federal funding. By stalling these processes, the new administration is preventing scientists from doing work that is critical to environmental progress.
The good news? We’ve been here before, and we know how to win. The Trump administration tried to silence science eight years ago, but we fought back – and we’ll do it again. The only difference is that the White House is moving even faster than last time, so we need the resources more than ever to meet this moment swiftly.
That’s why SEEC members are stepping up. SEEC Co-Chair Paul Tonko is the lead author of the Scientific Integrity Act, which is legislation that was borne out of the lessons we learned the last time Trump was in office. So while Trump may be more prepared this time, our members are too.
Science isn’t a political bargaining chip. It’s the key to protecting our health, our environment, and our future. Let’s make sure it gets the funding and respect it deserves.
