Friend, One of Donald Trump’s latest Executive Orders is a direct attack on the freedom of students to learn in safe and inclusive schools. Going after transgender students, inclusive education that provides insights into the history and experiences of people of diverse backgrounds, and seeking to take away teachers’ ability to provide comprehensive instruction on a variety of topics, this Executive Order is just the latest way to impose a radically extreme agenda on our schools. But this Order is just about stoking fear: it legally cannot require school districts to change their curricula. When you click on that link, you’ll find a document with language about how the Executive Orders do not require any policy change at the district level. We want to share guidance with school leaders so that they feel empowered to continue protecting ALL our students. When you open the document, you can copy and paste the text into an email to your school district officials. There are places in the email copy to include the name of the school you’re writing about and information about a student close to you, if you’d like. Please feel free to add your personal perspective to what you send — your decisionmakers want to hear from YOU. You can send this email to your district’s superintendent, your school board, and/or a principal of a student close to you. Together, we can fight for just and inclusive schools, even – and especially because of – efforts like these to shut us out of decisions about how our children are educated. Executive Orders, like this one, are a wish list from the President, and this Order will be challenged in the courts. Education policy remains directed by your state. Copy the letter for your school decisionmakers here! >> Thank you for your advocacy on this topic. Please stay tuned for more ways to resist policies coming from this new extremist administration.
