Kamala, Kamala, Kamala, Kamala, Kamala Chameleon.


Los Angeles Times (7/7/19) reports: "Harris has endorsed the 'Green New Deal,' the ambitious climate change plan proposed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (D-N.Y.). But Harris hasn’t embraced the plan’s most controversial features, such as a federal job guarantee for every working-age American. And she’s been silent on other leading proposals, including a federal carbon tax. That’s left environmental groups unsure where she stands. Greenpeace rated her 12th among the Democratic candidates on a climate scorecard, behind Biden, Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. (Jay Inslee, the Washington state governor who has made climate change his signature issue, came in first.) Harris spokeswoman Lily Adams told me the candidate 'believes we need to take bold action on the climate crisis' and will offer a plan at some point, but didn’t provide a timetable. Harris’ policy gymnastics have created a strategic ambiguity that could cut both ways."

"Look, at the end of the day, people would rather not want to pay the tax. I believe fundamentally that when they know that they’re paying more at the pump, they’re paying more to heat their homes, they’re paying more to bring goods and services into remote locations, the rebate will not cover those costs. It’s also going to drive away jobs and growth."

When Trump conflates CO2 with local air pollutants it's a bug, but when carbon taxers do it it's a feature. 


Salt Lake Tribune (7/7/19) op-ed: "Much of urban Utah suffers from poor air quality. Much of rural Utah struggles economically. It may be possible to address both problems with the same piece of legislation: the Clean The Darn Air measure that is gathering signatures to qualify for the 2020 ballot....The Clean The Darn Air ballot measure would provide an opportunity to improve both air quality and rural economies. It would impose a carbon tax on fossil fuels, the dominant source of our air pollution problems."

This bears repeating.


Energy In Depth (7/3/19) reports: "Booming shale production in the Permian and Appalachian Basins has ushered in a new era of American energy dominance since 2012. From the 1960s through the early 2000s, the United States had been in a sort of dance with the former Soviet Union and Russia for the title of the world’s top natural gas producer, according to BP statistical data. At the start of the shale revolution – a mere decade ago in 2008 – America’s 52.7 billion cubic feet per day (bcf/d) ranked it second behind Russia who produced 59 bcf/d. By 2011, the two countries were were neck and neck at 59.7 bcf/d, but by 2012 the United States had secured its number one position. And it hasn’t slowed down since: America produced 24 percent more natural gas per day in 2018 than Russia and recorded the largest annual growth seen by any country in history."

I challenge you to put together a more ominous string of descriptors than "Germany's Social Democrat Environment Minister".


Deutsche Welle (7/5/19) reports: "Germany's Social Democrat (SPD) Environment Minister Svenja Schulze presented three independent studies on possible carbon tax schemes in Berlin on Friday. Insisting such a tax would not unduly burden the poor, she said, 'those who decide to live a more climate-friendly life could actually get money back.' The plans Schulze presented suggested an initial €35 ($39.50) tax on each metric ton of CO2, to be increased to €180 by 2030. The idea being that the more expensive petrol, natural gas, and heating oil become, the less people will use...Though environmentalists and economists have long called for such measures, citizens are not always so convinced. In France, a green tax on fuel led to months of violent anti-government protests."

Because the other 25 candidates aren't quite crazy enough...


Politico (7/7/19) reports: "Tom Steyer, the billionaire environmental activist who toyed with a 2020 presidential run before deciding against it, has told people he plans to announce that he’s entering the race for the Democratic nomination, according to three people familiar with his plans. Steyer had said in January that he was passing on a 2020 run. Steyer held a private conference call last week to announce to people who work for Need to Impeach, NextGen America and Steyer's Sacramento office that he was planning to run, according to one of the people."
