Dear Friend,
These past two weeks have been a whirlwind in Congress, marked by the Trump Administration’s chaotic policies including: attempts to freeze federal funding for critical services and claims about the cause of a tragic midair collision in our nation’s capital. Please know I am committed to fighting back against the policies from the new administration now more than ever. It was good to be home in Minnesota this week to meet with many of our partners who are also committed to protecting our community. I’m excited to share what good trouble I have been stirring up.
First Town Hall of the Year in Fridley
Thank you to everyone who showed up and participated in our first town hall of the year this week in Fridley! And a special thank you to MN State Senator Mary Kunesh, MN State Rep. Erin Koegel, and former Fridley Mayor Scott Lund for joining me – always grateful to have strong, dedicated partners committed to serving our communities. You can watch the full town hall here.
Re-Introducing the Neighbors Not Enemies Act
Last week, I re-introduced the Neighbors Not Enemies Act, alongside Senator Mazie Hirono, Rep. Ayanna Pressley, Rep. Jan Schakowsky, and Rep. Delia Ramirez, to repeal the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 once and for all. President Trump has cited the Alien Enemies Act as justification for carrying out targeted mass deportations. No one should be deported or persecuted based on prejudice. House Democrats stand firm in our fight for a just and humane immigration system. I believe in standing up and look out for my neighbors, please educate yourself and others by reviewing and sharing my “Know Your Rights” webpage here.
Fighting for a Progressive Agenda
At the Congressional Progressive Caucus press conference, we outlined our strategy to push back against Trump’s harmful policies. We will continue fighting for economic justice, reproductive rights, climate action, and protections for marginalized communities. Progress is only possible when we stand together, and I am committed to ensuring that our values are at the forefront of policy making.
Minnesota Minute - Gopher Cheer and Dance Team
On the House floor, I had the honor of recognizing the University of Minnesota Spirit Squad, Gopher Cheer, and Dance teams for their historic wins at the national championships in Orlando! These incredible athletes brought home their first-ever national titles, making our entire state proud. Their hard work and dedication exemplify the best of Minnesota’s spirit! You can watch the speech here.
Meeting with The Consul General of Canada
I had the pleasure of meeting with Beth Richardson, the Consul General of Canada, to discuss the deep and lasting friendship between the U.S. and Canada. Minnesota does $600 million in trade with Canada every year, and the Trump administration’s tariff proposals threaten to devastate this vital economic relationship and increase prices for Minnesotans. I will continue working to protect the livelihoods of Minnesotans who depend on fair and stable trade policies.
Meeting with Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty
I sat down with Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty to discuss how we can protect our immigrant communities from the new executive orders signed by President Trump. Every person—regardless of immigration status—deserves dignity, respect, and protection under the law. I look forward to working with local leaders to ensure that MN-05 remains a welcoming place for all.
Securing $1 Million for People Serving People
I’m proud to have secured $1 million in Community Project Funding for People Serving People in Minneapolis. This funding will support PSP’s Modernization Project for Families Experiencing Homelessness and Disability, helping ensure that families have access to the resources they need to thrive. I was joined by Minnesota State Reps. Esther Agbaje, Sandra Feist, and Fue Lee to recognize this critical investment in our community.
Meeting with Governor Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison
While I was at the Minnesota State Capitol I stopped by to see Attorney General Keith Ellison. AG Ellison is fighting back against the Trump Administration's executive orders and just this week he was one of the Attorney Generals who won against the administration to continue to fund the government.
I also had a productive meeting with Governor Tim Walz to ensure we’re doing everything in our power to protect Minnesota’s communities against the executive orders brought forth by the Trump Administration.
Neighbors Not Enemies Act Resolution Press Conference
I was honored to join Mayor Jacob Frey, Council Member Aurin Chowdhury, and members of the Minneapolis City Council in recognizing Council Member Chowdhury’s resolution in support of my Neighbors Not Enemies Act. Congress must repeal the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to ensure no one is targeted based on their nationality
In Solidarity,
Ilhan Omar
