Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,   

This week, our city and country experienced a heartbreaking tragedy when a passenger plane and military helicopter collided over the Potomac River, with a total of 67 people on board. On behalf of our city, I am sending our love and prayers to the families, loved ones, and communities affected – we know that includes families here in our city and region, in Kansas and across the country, and even around the world. There is a profound sense of loss and grief.  

In this moment of tragedy, we are incredibly grateful for the hundreds of first responders who responded – immediately after the collision and in the days after. They have been working for days in frigid waters and difficult and heartbreaking conditions, and we are grateful for their heroic efforts as the recovery operation continues.

As those efforts continue, we also know that all Americans, and certainly the families who lost loved ones, deserve transparency and answers. The National Transportation Safety Board is now conducting an investigation into what happened, and it is my expectation at this stage that they will be transparent in sharing what they can, when they can.

If you are looking for a way to support the families, first responders, and supporting organizations, the Capital Region Community Foundations have set up a relief fund [ [link removed] ]. If you are donating to other funds, please be careful to avoid fundraising scams and only trust verified sources. Additionally, please be sure to only amplify accurate messaging from trusted sources on social media to avoid spreading misinformation.

During difficult weeks like this one, you can also help by checking in on friends and neighbors. And if you feel like you need to talk to someone yourself, you can talk to a trained mental health professional for free by calling the Crisis Lifeline at 988.
