Email from Rep. Hinson Friend, First and foremost, I am beyond devastated by the fatal plane crash America witnessed late Wednesday evening. Please join Matt and me as we continue praying for the victims, their loved ones, and first responders at the scene of this tragedy. I will continue monitoring the situation as more information becomes available so we can bring closure to the families of the fallen and ensure this never happens again. Earlier this week, I attended the House Republican Issues Conference and had the opportunity to hear directly from President Trump about his plans to secure the border, cut taxes, and restore American prosperity. I even had the chance to speak with Vice President Vance about media bias and the widespread lack of trust in the mainstream media. I had to tell him that lately my son has been using the phrase, "I don't care, Margaret," following the Vice President’s iconic interview with Margaret Brennan. His kids are a bit younger than mine, but he’ll understand the teenage sass soon enough! The contrast between the Trump-Vance Administration and the Biden-Harris Administration is clear. This administration is cutting through bureaucracy, draining the swamp, and rejecting the Washington way of doing things to deliver meaningful results. Best, Securing the Border and Deporting Criminal Aliens Promises were made to put Americans over criminal aliens, and this promise was kept as President Trump signed the bipartisan Laken Riley Act into law this week. This legislation included Sarah’s Law, legislation named for Iowan, Sarah Root – a young Iowan who was killed by an illegal immigrant. I supported Sarah's Law for the same reason I supported the Laken Riley Act. No illegal immigrant who commits a crime or harms an American should have the chance to commit another crime in America – let alone reside in our country. I am so thankful we have a president who will always put Americans first. We are making America safe again, and we are just getting started. Protecting US Farmland Last week, I helped introduce the bipartisan FARM Act. This legislation will prevent adversaries like China from strategically buying U.S. farmland. China doesn’t even allow its citizens to own land, yet China has purchased over 350,000 acres of America’s farmland. By ensuring the Secretary of Agriculture has a seat on CFIUS, we can ensure foreign transactions involving agricultural assets will receive proper oversight so we can prevent our adversaries from undermining our agriculture supply chains and national security. Around IA-02 Last week, my staff joined UnityPoint Health at ribbon cuttings for two PACE Senior Care centers. These centers in Hiawatha and Waterloo provide seniors with a wide range of services including doctor appointments, filling their prescriptions, and assisting with personal tasks like laundry and transportation. My staff was also able to attend the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance annual meeting. With over 1,200 members, this organization helps drive economic growth and success in the Cedar Rapids area. In Case You Missed It: Quick Hits This week is School Choice Week and I thanked Governor Reynolds for her leadership in expanding school choice. I chatted with The Daily Signal about rooting out Democrats’ woke ideologies and President Trump restoring the law of the land to two genders: male and female. I congratulated Lee Zeldin for becoming our next EPA administrator and look forward to working with him on expanding Iowa’s biofuels industry. I voiced Iowans priorities before the House Ways and Means Committee.
