Ensuring Justice for Laken Riley's Family

I had the distinct privilege of attending the signing of S.5, the Laken Riley Act late last week by Speaker Mike Johnson. This critical legislation requires Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to arrest and detain illegal immigrants who commit theft offenses, assault law enforcement officers, and commit crimes resulting in death or serious bodily injury to another individual. Additionally, it ensures states can hold future administrations accountable for radical, far-left immigration enforcement and open-border policies.

President Trump signed the Laken Riley Act into law earlier this week, the first bill of his second term. It brings justice to Laken's family, secures our border, and restores law and order in our communities.

MERIT Act Receives Strong Support

This week, my legislation, the Modern Employment Reform, Improvement, and Transformation Act (MERIT) Act, got a bill number H.R. 687 the first step as the bill moves through the legislative process. The MERIT Act would fundamentally reform and restructure the federal workforce by focusing on hiring and retaining officials on a merit basis, modeling employee dismissal with that of the private sector and lessen the time it takes to root out misconduct and poor performers.

The bill has received strong support from outside groups such as Heritage Action, Americans for Prosperity, and the Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC).

Rep. Loudermilk Co-sponsors Key Legislation

This week, I co-sponsored several pieces of legislation. These bills are as follows:

  1. H.R. 735 – United States Reciprocal Trade Act
    • Authorizes the President to negotiate with foreign nations on behalf of the American people to lower tariff rates on American goods, and when necessary, impose reciprocal tariffs on foreign-made goods entering the U.S.

  2. H.R. 7 – No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act
    • Prevents all federal funds from being used to pay for abortion or health benefits that include abortion.

  3. H.R. 650 – Families' Rights and Responsibilities Act
    • Affirms that parents have the fundamental right to direct the upbringing, education, and health care of their children.
    • Prevent the federal government from substantially burdening this fundamental right, without first passing the strict scrutiny test.
    • Allows parents to raise a violation of the bill as a claim or defense in judicial or administrative proceedings at the federal and state levels.

  4. H.R. 722 – Life at Conception Act
    • Affirms the fundamental right to life for every human being, born and unborn.
    • Declares that unborn children are "persons" under the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, allowing their right to life to be legally recognized and protected.

  5. H.R. 404 – Hearing Protection Act
    • Reduces the overly burdensome barriers required to purchase a firearm suppressor to ease access for law-abiding citizens simply trying to obtain the hearing protection they need.

  6. H.R. 452 – Miracle on Ice Congressional Gold Medal Act
    • Awards three Congressional Gold Medals to the members of the 1980 United States Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team for their historic victory over the Soviet Union in the 1980 Winter Olympics.
    • The three Congressional Gold Medals will be given to three different locations: the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in Eveleth, MN; the Lake Placid Olympic Center in Lake Placid, NY; and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Museum in Colorado Springs, CO.

Rep. Loudermilk Joins Law Enforcement Caucus

This week, I joined the Law Enforcement Caucus, a bipartisan group of lawmakers focused on supporting our law enforcement community. This group, created in 1994, advocates for local, state, and federal issues facing our nation's law enforcement officers, and serves as a clearinghouse for information and grants.

I will always have the backs of our exemplary men and women in blue who put their lives on the line every single day to protect and serve our communities.
