John,
In a chilling escalation against reproductive rights in America, and for the first time since Roe v. Wade was overturned, a district attorney has secured a grand jury indictment against a medical doctor for prescribing abortion medication across state lines.
A New York doctor has been indicted for prescribing abortion medication to a minor in Louisiana via telemedicine. The minor’s mother has also been indicted for providing the medication to her child.
The fact remains that abortion medication is safe, and the majority of Americans believe that these personal healthcare decisions should be made between patients and their healthcare providers without interference from politicians.
We applaud New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s strong opposition to the indictment and her commitment to protecting both providers and patients against these dangerous political attacks.
When the Trump Administration claims to want to leave this issue “up to the states,” this is what they are allowing.
Pregnant patients have already lost their lives, their fertility, and their autonomy because of state-level abortion bans. We’re devastated that any patient or provider could face felony charges over seeking or providing abortion care.
District attorneys, judges, state legislators, governors, and dozens of other elected offices have the power to either protect or to attack reproductive rights in America. We will continue to support leaders committed to gender equity and reproductive freedom, especially at the state and local levels, where our rights are so often won or lost.
In solidarity,
Team Vote Pro-Choice
