Maine Forest Service Awarded $9 Million for Climate and Carbon Management Practices
The Maine Forest Service (MFS) has been awarded $9 million in competitive grants from the USDA Forest Service. This funding, provided through the Inflation Reduction Act, will help eligible forestland owners implement climate-resilient forest management practices.
The funding will be used to create a new incentives program, expected to launch in *the Summer of 2025*, to assist woodland owners in applying silvicultural practices to improve forest health, sustainability, and carbon storage. Specific practices, such as pre-commercial thinning dense forests and removing invasive plant species, will be eligible for financial reimbursement. Emphasis will be placed on assisting underserved and beginning landowners.
The program is still being developed, and details will be finalized as soon as possible. The USDA Forest Service announced the grant awards in December. Maine Forest Service will continue to keep partners and prospective participants informed.
Program news and additional resources available through the MFS will be shared with interested individuals and organizations through the WoodsWiseWire [ [link removed] ] news bulletins. Questions or comments are invited by email to
[email protected], or by calling at *207-287-2791*
Woodland owners can contact their local MFS District Forester for individual assistance, including a no-cost site visit, and to learn about other incentives, resources, and educational opportunities. The MFS website has a complete directory of district foresters [ [link removed] ].
Thank you for your interest and partnership in bolstering sustainable and climate-resilient forest management in Maine.
