Dear John,
After a lengthy delay, Propositions A and B are finally in effect in McAllen!
Ground Game Texas started our latest campaign in McAllen early last year after we heard over and over again from voters in the area that they felt cynical and powerless about local politics. Proposition A is a campaign finance reform measure aimed at reducing the influence of big money donors, and Proposition B increases access to direct democracy with the powers of initiative, recall, and referendum.
While our efforts faced strong opposition, thanks to our amazing team, led by McAllen Campaign Manager Karen Salazar, and powered by the community, we succeeded at the ballot box, with Prop A winning 56.32% of the vote and Prop B winning 66.91%.
Unfortunately, but unsurprisingly, we continued to meet resistance after the election, with implementation being inexplicably delayed. However, thanks to a recent letter-writing campaign that resulted in hundreds of letters being emailed to city officials, the propositions have finally been adopted!
This is great news for McAllen voters – the rules will be in effect for the city’s upcoming election in May.
Our success in McAllen, and the hurdles we faced in getting there, is a reminder that organizing works, but it takes sustained effort. A monthly contribution of $10 or $25 provides essential support for our work in McAllen and across the state.
