Friend, the team at NILC is closely monitoring a dangerous proposal in Oklahoma that threatens the wellbeing of children across the state. Here’s what we know:

The Oklahoma State Board of Education just approved a proposal that requires parents to provide citizenship information when they enroll their children in school. This is a blatant attempt to undermine access to education for Oklahomans and instill fear in our communities.

The 1982 Supreme Court ruling in Plyler v. Doe made it clear: States cannot deny students access to public K-12 education based on their immigration status. This proposal would substantially threaten that right and would violate the Constitution. It’s a cynical and cruel attempt to frighten parents away from providing their children with an education — the fundamental building block for their futures.

This proposal is headed to the state legislature and governor next before it can take effect, so we’re calling on those elected officials to reject this harmful proposal. Sign our petition to stand up for every child’s right to a public education >>>

At NILC, we have a track record of defeating attacks on Plyler in both courts and state legislatures. And we will continue to do whatever it takes — whether through legal action or advocacy — to defend the right to education for all students.
