Dear friends,

In response to recent changes in Meta's content moderation policies, the Brazilian government held an important public hearing. On this occasion, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) recommended the urgent adoption of a clear and firm accountability regime for digital platforms in Brazilian law.

RSF welcomes the Brazilian government's efforts to raise the issue of risks relating to platforms' moderation policies to an international level, as it did during its presidency of the G20. However, the NGO recommends that the regulation of online platforms should become one of Brazil's legislative priorities in 2025.

The Brazilian government is one of the few not to remain silent in the face of Meta's announcement, and is now setting an important international example. The current position of the technology giants represents an escalation of attacks on journalism, amplifying misinformation and intensifying online violence against journalists. It is high time to put in place a regulatory programme establishing the responsibility of online platforms to remove illegal content and promote reliable sources of information.

In Europe, RSF has already called on the European Commission to ensure compliance with the Digital Services Act (DSA), and to require Meta to analyse the risks posed by changes to its policies in the United States. It is thanks to you that RSF can carry out these advocacy actions. Every donation is a decisive support for press freedom around the world.

Thank you for supporting us.
