January Take Five

Friend, it’s been a helluva start to the year. We hope you’re slamming the door on January with your head held high and your shoulders back. This administration and their henchmen will keep trying to dismantle constitutional rights and sow chaos in our communities, but we will continue to collectively refuse to normalize their divisive fear tactics.

Just this week, Trump fired labor champions from the National Labor Relations Board while workers in Philly were winning the first union in the country at an Amazon-owned Whole Foods store. And workers are banding together alongside their unions from AFGE and AFSCME to NIH Fellows Unitedto hold the Trump admin accountable for its harmful federal freeze and attacks on federal workers. What’s more powerful than a bully with a pen? A union.

These weirdos might not know it yet, but we know that you can’t throw workers in a corner and expect them not to swing back. We’re still organizing. We’re still protecting our communities. We’re still demanding justice.

Take a breather and dive into the first Take Five Newsletter of 2025!

We’re taking a look at how we connect with our community and would love to hear from you. Minute-by-minute breaking news seems to have become our new normal, so we want to be conscious of not adding to the heap. Grant us some patience as this space evolves and enjoy an abbreviated newsletter this month.

FROM GLOBAL LABOR JUSTICE: Over the past three months, the Fight the Heist worker activist committee in Indonesia, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and India organized a photo petition to Nike, resulting in 1,000 workers coming forward publicly for the first time with a message to Nike!

These workers know the risk of standing up to powerful companies and authoritarian systems, yet they are coming out of the shadows like never before to demand that Nike transform its supply chain to protect workers’ human rights and pay living wages.

Take Action: Pledge to share a message to Nike with a 1,000 photos of garment workers in March 2025.
