Friend,
The future of foreign aid from the United States has been in the news recently. While the details may be muddy, one thing remains clear: UNICEF is committed to helping children.
Right now, teams around the globe are hard at work delivering essential support for children in the world’s most vulnerable communities, and they will continue to do so. For generations, the United States has lived up to a global responsibility to take care of the most vulnerable in our own society — but I argue that this responsibility goes further. It also means reaching out to those in other parts of the world who lack the resources, opportunities and advantages we, as a nation, have.
In far too many humanitarian crises, children are the people who are most affected. Children’s lives are at risk and their needs grow larger every day. War, conflict, drought and extreme weather — dangers out of children's control — can change everything in a blink of an eye. It’s why we must stay ready to help. UNICEF is often the first, and in some cases the only, organization that can reach children in crisis with lifesaving aid.
Since its founding, UNICEF and partners have achieved measurable gains in children’s health, education and protection. These achievements include: the near elimination of diseases like polio; dramatic reductions in child mortality; significant increases in the number of children, especially girls, in school; millions of lives saved during natural disasters and much more. Importantly, this work has also spread the values of peace, compassion and generosity across the world.
This work is essential — and would not be possible without supporters like you. In this time of extreme uncertainty, your help is needed more than ever to ensure children can continue to be supported. Please make a donation today to help provide children with essential emergency relief, lifesaving vaccinations, quality education, access to safe water and sanitation and so much more.
The needs of children and families are not stopping, so neither will we. As long as children need their vaccines, pregnant moms need access to prenatal care, students need tools for better learning outcomes, and adolescents need protection services — UNICEF will be there to meet the moment.
While we await the aftermath of a potential government funding pause, let’s keep this critical work going. The world still needs U.S. leadership in this area — from our government and from the public. We as a country are well-served when we make these investments. Thank you for your unwavering commitment as a member of our community, and for helping UNICEF continue to deliver for children today, tomorrow and every day that follows.
With appreciation,
Michael J. Nyenhuis
