1) Volunteer State Approves One of the Largest School Choice Programs in History
OMG, 2025 is off to a spectacular start. The state legislature in Nashville just approved a nearly half-a-billion-dollar program ([link removed]) allowing low-income kids to choose the school of their choice. We're still learning all the details of the new program, but a big shoutout to Tennessee Governor Bill Lee for carrying this law over the goal line.
At this pace, by the end of next year, virtually every red state will have adopted school choice. As readers know, we've teamed with ALEC and Jeanne Allen (Yass Prize) to provide funds and a support network for outstanding school choice programs across the country. Our goal is to achieve "25 by 25." By this, we meant half the states adopting school choice programs by the end of 2025.
We may just get there.

2) Trump (and Reagan) Take On and Take Out Thomas Malthus
One of Trump's heroic executive orders was reinstating Ronald Reagan's Mexico City policy, which ends all federal taxpayer funding for overseas abortions.
We at UP don't take any position on social issues - including abortion. But the Mexico City policy has been distorted for decades by the left as a "gag order." This edict does NOT in any way inhibit a woman in Nigeria or Egypt or El Salvador from having an abortion. It simply says American taxpayer dollars won't pay for them. Planned Parenthood is free to fund every abortion in the world if they wish - and they have the money to do it.
For many decades, "family planning" became a euphemism for Malthusian population control. Having too many children was regarded by the Limits to Growth crowd (led by Paul Ehrlich of "The Population Bomb" fame) as a threat to the planet in much the same way that the climate crazies view CO2 emissions today.
These "family planning" programs included funds to support grizzly and inhumane FORCED abortion policies, sterilization programs, and even sex-selection infanticide in "one child" policies in nations like China. For decades, there were millions of girls demographically missing in China. The United Nations praised the China one child orders as "effective." The cruel irony is that these procedures were the OPPOSITE of a woman's "right to choose." It became the government's right to choose who could have babies and how many.
Julian Simon taught us all that human beings are the planet's greatest asset and the world's Ultimate Resource ([link removed]) . He reminded us that capitalism and prosperity result in net resource creation, not depletion. The multi-billion dollar "family planning" racket still to this day rejects that.
What a relief that Trump - like Reagan - is a humanist who gets that.
The chart below shows that more people means more food and less famine.

3) Exempt North American Crude Oil From Tariffs
Our friends at the Institute for Energy Research make a compelling case:
A proposed 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico would seriously disrupt the supply chain U.S. refineries rely on to produce the fuels and petroleum products Americans use every day. Even with upgrades to existing infrastructure, many refineries simply aren't built to accommodate such a significant tariff on Canadian crude. Given the long timelines for planning and permitting the necessary changes, plus the fact that refineries depend on refining margins to stay profitable, it would take several years for refineries to adapt to the changes in oil trade flows brought about by these tariffs...
Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, told Marketwatch in November that gas prices could rise by 30 to 40 cents per gallon, and possibly as much as 70 cents, once the tariffs take effect. This increase could occur within days of the tariffs being enacted, with the most significant impact in the Midwest, given its reliance on Canadian crude.

President Trump and leaders in Congress should be careful not to let trade policy undermine their North America energy dominance agenda.

4) Private Union Membership Reaches New All-Time Low - 6%
We've been told that 2024 was the year that union bosses flexed their muscle - especially with their pal Lunch Bucket Joe in the White House. The pro-union forces tout a United Auto Workers organizing victory at a Tennessee plant and some Starbucks baristas unionizing.
However, new data show that the percentage of workers who belong to unions in the U.S. hit a record low of 9.9% in 2024. By comparison, in 1983, during the Reagan years, it was 1 in 5.
However, the even bigger story in union membership is that private-sector unions are disappearing. In the 1950s, nearly all of the union members were private-sector workers.
Today, private-sector union membership has tumbled to only 5.9% of the workforce. ALL the remaining union power is in the government worker unions. Today 32% of public sector workers are in unions, with a majority of them in the NEA and the AFT (the two major teacher unions). The salary and benefit packages of government workers far outstrip those in the private sector.
[link removed]
Why are more and more blue-collar workers spurning unions? One answer is that the union bosses don't represent the interests of their members anymore. Trump won 47% of union household votes in 2024, but the union bosses gave 90% of union donations to Democrats - despite the fact that Biden's anti-fossil fuels crusade destroyed hundreds of thousands of blue-collar union jobs.
The biggest mystery of all is why Republicans are sucking up to the union bosses. Some Republicans are even calling for the rollback of Right to Work laws. So much for worker freedom.

5) IRS Now Takes Nearly Two Years to Resolve Stolen Identity Cases
Americans for Tax Reform reports ([link removed]) :
It now takes the IRS an average of 676 days to resolve identity theft cases, an incident where criminals file a tax return using somebody else's information.
This is five times longer than the 129 days it took in 2020.
What happened? The IRS massively expanded its "work from home" employee privileges.

Wait! We thought Biden's 80,000 new IRS agents were going to improve customer service for taxpayers!
