John,

"Before we had the solar extended to the cow shed, it was very scary and difficult to come out at night because this whole place would be dark," Susan Acan, 34, explained, "Now, with the lights available, once we sense maybe there is danger or something abnormal with the cows, it’s easy to come out because the place is always well lit."

John, in our day-to-day lives, it’s easy to take light for granted. But for many people around the world, like Susan, electricity isn’t a basic necessity; it’s a luxury. In fact, in Uganda, only 28% of people had access to electricity in 2018. In a country that relies heavily on dairy farming, a vast majority of farmers do not have the electricity needed to keep their farms running.

Project Solar is Heifer’s groundbreaking initiative that aims to raise $250,000 to provide families, farmers, and even entire communities with a reliable and renewable energy source. You are not just giving a family a solar panel — your gift sends lightbulbs, switches and training on how to use their panel — ultimately powering a farmer’s future now and for years to come!

In fact, Susan is just one of the many farmers around the world who have already benefited from Project Solar. Now, with a light source any time she needs it, Susan can safely check on her cows at any time of day — and can start milking them earlier or later in the day since she no longer depends on natural light. Her cows, two Friesian dairy cows, produce enough milk for the family to consume at home, with plenty left over to sell. The extra income from milk alone is enough to cover the school fees for Susan’s two children.

Gifting solar power provides more than a source of reliable energy; it gives families a whole new path forward — and upward — in life.

So please, bring power to a family in need with your gift to Project Solar.

Thank you for connecting a farmer with a reliable and sustainable source of power for the very first time!
