ClearPath Action Rundown
January 31st, 2025

Happy Friday!

Congratulations to Secretary Doug Burgum & Administrator Lee Zeldin on their confirmations by the U.S. Senate!

1. ClearPath grows power, infrastructure and minerals team

Samantha Edwards joined ClearPath’s policy team this week and will work on permitting and critical minerals policies.

Samantha started her career with Sen. Mitt Romney and then Sen. Mike Lee’s offices. She was most recently leading the energy, environment and natural resources portfolio for Sen. Kyrsten Sinema where she engaged in bipartisan efforts to pass legislation that supported clean energy and minerals development in the West.

Welcome, Samantha!

2. Chevron + GE Vernova power data centers with natural gas…

Chevron and GE Vernova are partnering to build natural gas-based power plants next to data centers in the U.S. The plants will:

  • Generate up to 4 gigawatts of power – enough electricity to power three million homes;
  • Be designed to potentially integrate carbon capture and storage; and
  • Provide power directly to these data centers located in the U.S. Southeast, Midwest and West regions.

Plug in: The U.S. needs natural gas. Read here for more on the playbook on reducing emissions.

3. …Plus: Million-dollar moves in manufacturing

GE Vernova plans to invest $600M into expanding manufacturing of its energy products in the U.S.

Investments will focus on:

  • Expanding its tech in grid, nuclear, onshore wind and electrification; and
  • Gas power, grid, nuclear and onshore wind manufacturing sites.

What’s clear: This investment includes $300M in support of its gas power business and build-out of capacity gas turbines, which customers like data center operators have had to get in years-long lines to purchase because of soaring demand.

4. Clean energy still very popular with voters

ClearPath Action has been studying how American voters think about clean energy for close to a decade and our latest numbers from this month are encouraging! A few toplines include:

  • 78% of voters believe it important that their Member of Congress supports policies that promote clean energy.
  • 77% support tax incentives for American companies that develop clean energy technology
  • 76% support tax incentives for American manufacturers of things like steel and cement who find ways to emit less carbon
  • 70% support reforms to fix the lengthy permitting process that slows the building of new clean energy generation

Plug in: If you’re interested in going deeper with the numbers, please reach out to bolar@clearpathaction to request a briefing.

5. Rising energy demand requires more pipeline infrastructure

The new administration is looking to speed up the process of building more natural gas pipelines across the U.S.

President Trump declared a national energy emergency, directing the Army Corps of Engineers to use its emergency authority under the Clean Water Act to speed up the approvals for sections of those pipelines that cross lands and water bodies under the Corps authority.

What’s clear: As energy demand rises, so will the need for more pipelines. They are the most land-efficient way to transport materials while minimizing environmental impact. Accelerating natural gas pipeline construction will also reduce flaring of natural gas in several prominent oil-producing areas.

6. ICYMI

  • 160 companies, trade groups and policy organizations – including ClearPath Action – called on Congress to maintain bipartisan support for the 45Q tax credit, highlighting the importance of 45Q and carbon management technologies for maintaining U.S. global energy leadership, meeting demand and driving economic development.
  • Core Power announced a design for floating nuclear plants.

ClearPath believes America must lead the world in innovation over regulation…markets over mandates…providing affordable, reliable, clean energy.

That's all from us. Thanks for reading and have a great weekend!
