Donald Trump is a bully. And like any bully…we need to stand up to him.

If we don’t, our international world order is in danger. He’s already threatened to annex Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal. He’s withdrawn from the Paris climate agreement and the World Health Organization. He’s ordered a suspension of all foreign aid – including critical HIV medication.

But the President of Colombia just set an example for all of us. When Trump started deportations, his lackeys treated the people brutally. President Petro demanded that they be treated like people, not prisoners. And after a brief skirmish of words and threats – Petro got exactly what he wanted (regardless of how the press reported it).

We need leaders everywhere to know that people have their back to do exactly this, over and over again. 

The reality is that Trump is President of the US and this will be a rough 4 years. But if we act fast, and together, we can make his presidency as hard as possible. If we delay…if we don’t show politicians around the world that standing up to Trump is the WINNING political strategy…the amount of damage he does could be incomprehensible.

A CNN reporter just quit his job and gave the quote “it is never a good time to bow down to a tyrant”. It’s a perfect summary of how the world should be looking at Trump and his actions right now.

There will be countless battles over specific things Trump is trying to do in the next few years. But he’s moving so fast in his initial blitzkrieg on the US Constitution and international order that if we don’t draw a basic line in the sand – and show our own political leaders that we want them to do the same – he could remake the entire international order in his own image before anyone mobilises.

And what we will have is a world shaped by crypto-fascist billionaires to their sole benefit. A world in which only the richest can access medicine, clean food and water. A world in which backroom deals force Palestinians out of their ancestral land. A world in which our planet is pushed beyond what it can take.

Right now, it is not too late. For our leaders to see that Trump is an aberration, and the people they represent do not want their countries to roll over to his whims.
