Xinka Parliament Calls Out Pan American Silver Obstruction of Escobal Mine Consultation

The Xinka are an Indigenous Peoples who live in what is now southern Guatemala. In 2014, the mining firm Tahoe Resources opened a massive silver mine in their territory without their consent amidst the violent repression of peaceful protestors. Read more.

Cultural Survival and Partners Submit Alternative Report to CEDAW on Violations of the Rights of Indigenous Women in Nepal

Cultural Survival and our partner organizations in Nepal, including Nepal Tamang Women Association, Newa Misa Daboo, Sunuwar Women Society, Indigenous Women's League Nepal (IWL Nepal), and National Indigenous Disabled Women Association Nepal (NIDWAN), submitted an alternative report on the situation of Indigenous women’s rights in Nepal for the 90th session of the Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), which will take place in Geneva from February 3rd to 21st, 2025. Read more.

Cultural Survival Strongly Condemns the Eviction of the Lof Pailako in Argentina

The Mapuche Tehuelche community of the Lof Pailako in Chubut, Argentina, are facing forced eviction from their ancestral lands. On Thursday, January 2, 2025, a court official arrived in the community along with federal police and personnel from Los Alerces National Park to give notice of eviction on January 9, “by force” if the community does not vacate voluntarily. Read more. En español.

Fires and Monoculture Threaten Life in La Chiquitanía, Bolivia

From May to October 2024, several fires broke out in different parts of Chiquitanía, Santa Cruz, Bolivia, with serious consequences for the forest and the surrounding populations. Fires have been a phenomenon repeated every year in this area. Read more. En español.

Miskitu Human Rights Defender Speaks Out about Sandinista Constitutional Reform

Anexa Alfred Cunningham, 45, a Miskitu Indigenous member of the UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, spoke out on December 20, 2024, on the Constitutional reforms Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega will put into place later this month, calling the reforms "nefarious" (nefasto). Read more.
