News from Representative Teresa Leger Fernández

Dear Friends,

When I meet with seniors across New Mexico, they always ask me, “What’s going to happen to Social Security?” I see the same look of concern on all their faces, as they wonder what will happen not only to themselves, but to their neighbors if Social Security goes under.

Social Security benefits are a right and a contract. American workers pay into Social Security their entire working lives and trust that it will be there for them when they need it.

That’s why last year, I co-sponsored and Democrats passed the Social Security Fairness Act. Before the end of his administration, President Biden became the first president in more than 20 years to expand Social Security benefits by signing the Act into law. The Social Security Fairness Act repeals the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO), provisions that reduced the benefits of many retired public servants and their families.

Thanks to this new law, over 15,875 New Mexicans will see their Social Security benefits increase according to the Social Security Administration’s Office of Research, Evaluation and Statistics.

If you’d like to learn more about the Social Security Fairness Act and how Democrats plan to continue to protect and expand Social Security, please register for my virtual roundtable on Tuesday, February 4th at 11:00 AM MT. You can register HERE.

Join me and special guests from the Social Security Administration, National Active & Retired Federal Employees New Mexico, and the New Mexico Alliance for Retired Americans as we discuss the benefits of this legislation for New Mexicans.
