The last few weeks have been a whirlwind, John.
Donald Trump pardoned insurrectionists, declared a national energy emergency to greenlight drilling, and pulled the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Agreement — again. And every day that I turn on the news, there is another attack on democracy, the planet, or basic human decency.
It feels overwhelming. Exhausting, even. But here’s the truth: No matter how many executive orders he signs, no matter how many reckless stunts he pulls, he can’t change one thing — the power of grassroots organizing.
This month, we proved that. Together, we kicked off 2025 with important down-ballot victories for climate champions in two special elections. These wins set the stage for what’s possible this year. But to keep winning, we need to keep organizing. My team set an ambitious goal to raise $60,000 this month from emails like this one to fuel the next wave of critical races. Can you chip in today to help us propel more climate champions to victory? [[link removed]]
🌍 Virginia was one of the first battlegrounds of 2025, and the stakes were high. With the state Senate hanging by a thread, Republicans saw Senate District 32 as their chance to seize control — paving the way for Trump’s allies to roll back clean energy progress and open the state to more drilling. But we fought back. And we won. Kannan Srinivasan’s victory keeps Virginia’s Senate in pro-climate hands, ensuring that Trump’s agenda hits a wall at the state level.
🌍 In Minnesota, Doron Clark’s victory in Senate District 60 flipped the state Senate back to a one-seat Democratic majority this week, breaking a 33-33 deadlock. This win means Minnesota can move full speed ahead on its ambitious climate goals (for now) — just as Trump and his fossil fuel allies try to drag us backward at the federal level.
No matter what happens in Washington, state and local leaders are the ones deciding whether polluters can dump toxins into our air and water with impunity. Whether our communities invest in clean energy. Whether we fight for a livable future — or let Trump and Big Oil rip it away.
With over 100,000 down-ballot seats on the line this year, even the smallest races can have a massive impact. Some of the most critical state legislatures are controlled by just one or two seats. That means one special election victory can literally determine the balance of power.
But this work takes resources. Your support could be the difference between victory and defeat in the fights ahead.
