Friend,

The City of Richmond will be officially entering Phase I of reopening this Friday, May 29th.

Yesterday, I proposed that Richmond enter an amended Phase I for the good of our city, but Governor Northam denied that request. While I am disappointed in this decision, we will continue to proceed with great caution to keep our community safe as we join the rest of the Commonwealth in Phase I of reopening.

The governor also announced that beginning Friday, masks will be required in indoor public places, with some exceptions, following my request last week. In addition to wearing facial covering where required, I am adding these strong recommendations that I encourage everyone to follow as we begin to reopen the city:

• All Richmonders should wear a mask whenever in public, especially if it is challenging to maintain 6 feet of distance.
• Faith communities should operate virtually. If they choose to gather in person, it should be outdoors.
• If restaurants and breweries offer outdoor seating, we ask that they keep a voluntary log of people they seat to help with contact tracing.

We have also asked that the state continue to work with us to provide protective equipment, like sanitizer and cloth masks.

As we cautiously enter Phase I, I will continue to collaborate with state and local agencies to increase testing capacity, contact tracing, and isolation support in the city to “box the virus in.”

Stay safe and stay strong,

Levar

P.S. Countless organizations are working hard every day to support our community during this crisis. If you are able, your support right now will make a huge impact:
